How to get the most out of Facebook in a cultural institution?

The use of Facebook in cultural institutions through three available formats

For some time now, Facebook has been about much more than just uploading a photo or creating an event. In the last few years they have added functions, mostly free, that allow institutions to enrich the format in which they share content with their fans. Of these new formats, here at Casa Batlló we have tried three: panoramic photos, 360º photos and videos and, lastly, live telecasts.

Panoramic photographs are created using the photo application of any mobile device, whether it uses an Android operating system or an iOS one. After taking the panoramic photo, all we have to do is create a new post in Facebook, inserting the image. The result allows users to tour all points of the panoramic photo with ease, either on their mobile phone by moving it around or on a computer with the help of the mouse. Our first panoramic photo in October 2016, which was of the Great Hall of the Noble Floor. This is a unique space which we wanted to share through Facebook with all our page’s followers.

The second format would be photographs or videos in 360º. At present, to record in these formats you need a camera that takes photographs and videos in 360º, and then you have to upload them to Facebook. This type of format offers the possibility to take a video or photographic tour of a space in 360º. Here at Casa Batlló, over the last few months we have shared with our followers a whole series of photos and videos of different parts of Casa Batlló using 360º technology, includingthe entrance hall or to attic, among others.

Lastly, live telecasts are one of the formats most appreciated by Facebook itself. Telecasts allow you to share what is happening live in an institution through a video on a Facebook page. The possibility for viewers to comment or react during the broadcast allows the person making the video to respond in real time to viewers’ questions and, ultimately, makes for a much more interactive video. We incorporate this format into all our campaigns. For example, in December 2016 we showed what was happening in Casa Batlló on the occasion of the Christmas campaign and, during the summer, we broadcast our concerts of the Magical Nights.
