Casa Batlló is also on Chinese social networks

The modernist jewel reaches a broader audience with its presence on Weibo and WeChat

In addition to its presence on the most popular western social networks such as Facebook, Twitter and Instagram, today we are highlighting the presence of Casa Batlló on Chinese social networks, specifically Weibo and WeChat. Since July of 2015, Casae Batlló has been present on Weibo and since 2016 on WeChat, two of the social networks most widely used by the Chinese public, with the goal of getting closer to one of the most populous segments of the countries when it comes to visiting the modernist jewel of Antoni Gaudí in Barcelona. The great attraction that Gaudí holds for the Chinese public has led not just to profiles for Casa Batlló on China’s social networks, but also to translation of the website into Chinese, availability of the video guide in that language, and celebration of the Year of the Fire Rooster, for example.

Weibo bears a certain similarity to what we understand as Twitter in the west, since it also puts a limitation on the number of characters used. This network was launched in 2009 and currently has more than 340 million active users. Museums, especially French ones, have been pioneers in terms of maintaining a presence on Weibo. For example, the Louvre and the Musée d’Orsay have profiles there, as do American institutions including the MoMa, the Met and the Art Institute of Chicago. Our frequent postings focus not only on aspects directly related to Casa Batlló, but also on events taking place in Barcelona, such as the 25th Anniversary of the 1992 Olympic Games or the upcoming Chinese film festival, known as the Lychee Film Festival, where Casa Batlló is hosting a screening of short films.

On the other hand, the social network WeChat was created by Tencent in 2011, and it has now become established as the queen of the social networks in China with more than 938 million active users. The features it offers go well beyond those of a simple social network, since it even allows payments to be made among users, configuration of accounts with personalised menus and the appearance of posts in newsletter format. In addition, WeChat lets its users create software applications and games within the network, which has made it essential for any Chinese citizen.
