Casa Batlló wishes you Happy Year 4715!
And no, we have not made a mistake, for our visitors from China, on January 28th a new year begins and according to the traditional Chinese calendar this Year is the year of the Rooster. During these dates the Chinese celebrate the Spring Festival, the celebration par excellence of the traditional Chinese festivals.
It is two weeks full of celebrations, beginning with New Year’s Day (January 27th) and ending with the Lantern Festival of 2017 (February 11th). During these times Chinese citizens take advantage to travel, visit family, special meals and fireworks. Everyone celebrates it, especially during the first three days of the festival, and at Casa Batlló we welcome those who come to visit Gaudi´s architectural treasure.
To welcome this “Spring Festival”, people hang red posters with poetic verses on their doors, they also decorate red walls with Chinese New Year paintings and lanterns. For this reason, Casa Batlló has arranged a poster and a smartphone case to bring in the Chinese new Year, the year of the Rooster.
The illustration has been made by the well-known illustrator Bakea, who wanted to pay tribute to the dragon of Casa Batlló, which crowns the facade with its colorful scales, and make it come alive to celebrate the Chinese New Year. In it, we also find the rooster, a sign that in Chinese astrology is considered as the hero, the least understood and the most eccentric of all the signs. Due to this, the Rooster walks showing all its elegance and is represented within the Chinese culture by its song in the dawn and to start Spring!
