This July, Casa Batlló celebrates two decades since its inclusion in the UNESCO World Heritage List. This international recognition pays tribute to Gaudí’s genius and invites us to reflect on the outstanding universal value of our legacy and the responsibility it entails to preserve it for future generations.
A milestone in Barcelona’s heritage history
In 2005, UNESCO extended the World Heritage designation initially granted in 1984 to Park Güell, Palau Güell and Casa Milà, to include four additional key works by Gaudí: Casa Batlló, the Crypt of Colònia Güell, the Nativity Façade and Crypt of the Sagrada Família, and Casa Vicens. This inclusion was made possible thanks to the joint efforts of public and private institutions, building managers, and heritage experts. The outstanding universal value, authenticity, integrity, and conservation strategies of each component were thoroughly documented.
Being a World Heritage Site: a long-term commitment
Being a World Heritage Site is more than an honour—it is a profound responsibility. This status entails a commitment to protect and promote the site’s outstanding universal value in the long run. At Casa Batlló, this translates into active policies in conservation, sustainability, research, and education. Our goal is to ensure that this legacy not only endures over time, but continues to spark emotion and inspiration. This heritage responsibility also involves ongoing dialogue with the community, other institutions, and international bodies to promote sustainable and innovative management with a people-centred institutional model.
20 years later: towards a living and shared heritage
Casa Batlló is a masterpiece by Gaudí, but it is also a living space that, over the past two decades, has successfully combined conservation with innovation, welcoming new audiences. Since its recognition by UNESCO in 2005, we have worked to increase accessibility, foster research, integrate immersive technologies, and promote heritage education. This anniversary is an opportunity to reaffirm our commitment to an open, living, sustainable, and shared heritage. It is a time to celebrate what we have achieved, look to the future with hope, and continue to share the magic and emotion of Casa Batlló with everyone.
Happy 20th anniversary!
