As part of Gaudí Year 2026, Gaudí: The Awakening of a Genius arrives in Barcelona, offering audiences a new family musical that explores the childhood and formative years of Antoni Gaudí. Tickets are already on sale for the production, which will premiere at Teatre Poliorama on 15 November 2026 and run until 24 January 2027.
On 26 June, the Teatre Fortuny in Reus hosted the show’s premiere in a particularly symbolic setting, both because of the dates—between the anniversaries of Antoni Gaudí’s death and birth (he died on 10 June 1926 and was born on 25 June 1852)—and because of its close connection to the region where his story began. As Gary Gautier, CEO of Casa Batlló, explains: “We wanted this journey into the origins of the genius to begin close to his roots before making its way to Barcelona.”
An innovative musical production
The musical offers an original and moving look at the early years of the world-renowned architect. Through live music, humour, fantasy and an innovative staging, the production reveals how a boy shaped by illness and fascinated by nature gradually developed the sensitivity and creativity that would transform architecture forever.
Director Cristina Estarelles explains: “We wanted to move away from the monumental image of the genius and instead focus on the child behind the architect. We were interested in understanding how illness, the observation of nature and his extraordinary sensitivity helped shape his unique way of seeing the world. This is a story about creativity, but also about resilience and the ability to transform difficulties into opportunities.”
Driven by Casa Batlló during Gaudí Year 2026
Gaudí: The Awakening of a Genius forms part of the activities commemorating the centenary of Antoni Gaudí’s death, presenting the architect from a human, accessible and inspiring perspective for audiences of all ages.
Casa Batlló’s involvement—one of Gaudí’s most iconic masterpieces and one of the world’s leading institutions dedicated to preserving and sharing his legacy—has been fundamental to the conception and development of the project. According to Gary Gautier: “For the first time, Casa Batlló brings Gaudí’s story to the stage through a musical created for audiences of all ages. It is a new way of sharing his legacy by focusing on his childhood and on the deeply human side of an extraordinary creator.”
Poliorama: a benchmark for family theatre
Anna Victori, partner at Teatre Poliorama, welcomes the production as part of the theatre’s family programme: “We are delighted to present this original Catalan musical as part of our family programming.
