Casa Batlló lights up in blue to welcome the World Capital of Architecture 2026

On 6, 7 and 8 February, eight iconic buildings recognised as UNESCO World Heritage illuminate their façades simultaneously.

In 2026, Barcelona experiences one of the most significant cultural and urban milestones of the decade. Designated World Capital of Architecture by UNESCO and the International Union of Architects (UIA), the city places architecture at the heart of a collective narrative that spans neighbourhoods, disciplines and perspectives.

To officially welcome this designation, on 6, 7 and 8 February, eight emblematic buildings recognised as UNESCO World Heritage illuminate their façades in blue. Casa Batlló takes part in the inaugural event celebrating Barcelona’s role as an international benchmark for architecture, alongside the Sagrada Familia, Casa Vicens, Casa Milà – La Pedrera, Palau Güell, Park Güell, Palau de la Música Catalana and the Sant Pau Art Nouveau Site.

More than 1,500 activities
This symbolic lighting marks the beginning of a programme that will run for ten months —from 12 February to 13 December— and will include more than 1,500 activities across all districts of the city. An open and participatory initiative, driven by over 170 organisations, inviting reflection on how we live, inhabit and build our environments.

Casa Batlló façade lightings
Casa Batlló’s participation in this initiative forms part of a well-established tradition of solidarity lightings, through which its façade becomes a space for collective expression and social commitment. On this occasion, the blue light not only celebrates the World Capital of Architecture 2026, but also reinforces Casa Batlló’s commitment to placing its heritage at the service of cultural, social and human causes. A way of continuing to engage with the present and projecting architectural legacy into the future, using light as a universal language.
